Melissa Carder

I was born in St. Petersburg, Florida and lived there until leaving home for Duke University in 1996. My first year at university was a turning point in my spiritual life.

Although I grew up going to church, it wasn't until I joined an InterVarsity small group and began reading the Bible on my own that I began to understand the richness and necessity of the gospel and to know Christ in a personal way. As I participated in campus ministry leadership, I began to sense a call to ministry.

After graduation, I worked for a year at a non-profit in Washington, DC, providing casework to homeless men and women. Upon acceptance to Covenant Seminary, I moved to St. Louis and completed a Masters of Arts in Theological Studies. After graduating in 2003, I returned to Washington, drawn by a love for the city and a desire to return to family and friends.

I worked for two years as a campus ministry intern with Reformed University Fellowship at the University of Maryland. At the end of my internship, I worked with Mission to the World in partnership with my church Grace DC, bringing together my love of the church and passion for the poor and needy Washington. Later I provided case management for families on the waiting list for emergency shelter in Fairfax County.

Following a desire to serve in the local church, as well as a passion for ministering to women, in January, 2007 I accepted a position as Director of Women's Ministries at Fourth Presbyterian Church in which I currently serve. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to walk alongside women of all ages, to connect them with one another and to teach them the freeing, beautiful gospel of Christ and its specific applications.

Outside of work, I delight in spending time with friends and family, most notably my identical twin nieces, and sampling the diverse cultural offerings of Washington where I live.
