Cary Campbell Umhau,
Senior Writer
I love to write; I love to juxtapose things that are seemingly unrelated; I love those "Aha!" moments when God shows me something and helps a new piece fit the puzzle of life. Not that we ever get to see the whole puzzle… but each new insight and each conviction that will lead to growth and more of God are exciting.
But sometimes I can get off course and seek the revelations instead of seeking God.
And I guess that's a fitting introduction for a biographical sketch of me. For my life has not been so much about the careers and resumé stuff as it has been about being on a pilgrimage to an awareness of God and his actual, real, genuine love for me. A journey through rules and roles into the lap of God. And now that I'm there, you couldn't lure me out.
When I meet new people who ask me what I do, I often say something like "My passion is to explore people's perceptions of what, if anything, God has to do with every day life." Yes, it's a conversation stopper sometimes but not any more so than it used to be when I said, "I'm staying home with three children." That, sadly, sent people running for the door.
I like to ask others, instead of "What do you do?", "What do you get excited about?" Sometimes they're the same thing. Usually not. For me they're the same thing. And it took me until I was almost 40 to figure that out. Circuitous paths are valuable.
You might not see the connection between catering, marketing racehorse syndicates, editing, crawling through thrift stores looking for treasures and buying and selling on eBay, taking road trips, drinking gallons of sweet tea and coffee while hanging out with people, reading a ton (and writing all over my books) and filling up notebook upon notebook with "ideas for later."
The theme, to me, is that I love to sort through things and find the golden nugget in the middle. That's editing. That's marketing. That's eBay. That's travel. That's conversation. That's mentoring. That's, for me, life. My way of doing pilgrimage, of listening to and for God, alone and with others.
For the sake of helping you answer, "Why would I want to read what Cary writes?" I'll tell you that I'm experienced in mentoring one-on-one and in small groups. I'm a freelance writer and editor and Bible teacher. I've spoken at numerous churches, retreats and secular venues on topics ranging from C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters to family traditions to mentoring to Facebook (a talk covered by Fox News).
I've developed several programs/curriculum for helping women grow in their relationships with God and other people. The most noteworthy of those is JOY Academy, a year-long mentoring program designed to "normalize brokenness while pointing to the depth of the love of Christ" (available for purchase soon).
I have worked on the staff of a Washington, DC area church as Director of Discipleship. I'm married (26 years) with three very diverse, young adult children. I attend St. Brendan's in the City, an Anglican church in Washington, DC. I count my relationship with God as my greatest treasure and hope that you will come to know me, beyond all these facts and impressions, simply as an apprentice to Jesus.
